Q2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Above you can see all three of elements, on the top left you can see our album cover and the back. On the top right you can see the inside of our album case and on the bottom is our poster to advertise the album.

Synergy can be defined as the way in which different elements of a media conglomerate work together to promote linked products across different media.

In our main product and ancillary test we have connected them by a lot of common themes which occur throughout our video and our dig-pak.

The first piece of synergy we have used is the white animal masks, they occur in all three of the elements we have created. We first had the idea of using intertextuality with the masks because of the film The purge, we felt it gave a sense of the unknowing. It also keeps the audience interested in the video as they are constantly wandering who they are. We drifted away from he original idea from the film as they are actually real, unlike our video where they are all in his mind. However, we did get the originally idea from the film. We see the white animal masks as a trademark for our song. The idea of putting the mask in all three of the elements was because we wanted people to see white masks in the street and immediately think of our song and music video.

Another combination we have added is our artist name written across his eyes in the album front cover. We did this because we wanted a clear indication of who the album was made by. We also feel that having his artist name written over his eyes is quite unique and stands out compared to other albums. This links the album cover to our artists name, so when people pick up the album in shop they instantly know who it is, unlike in some situations where you have to look for the name of the artist.

We have based our music video on our actor having schizophrenia, we have tried to represent this is our digi-pak by showing the people in the animal masks stood behind him. We have also tried to show his condition by having the cracks in the screen, we aimed for it to show cracks in his vision from where the schizophrenia comes from.

We wanted it to come across as his life is slowly falling apart, from the constant taking of the drugs has lead to panic attacks and paranoia.

The colour scheme we used was to try and represent his condition and his fight with schizophrenia. As you can see the colours are dark and eerie feeling. There is a sense of synergy between the way the actor feels and the colours through out the three elements. Due to the colours you can clearly tell that he is distressed and not thinking properly.

The three pictures above all link to the main part of the video, him buying and taking the drugs. We tried to represent this by have a few tablets in a small plastic bag, this was the most realistic way we could represent them. We tried to link the three scenes together by using a simple black and white colour scheme which are aim was to show it was a flashback. We wanted the scenes to come across to the audience that the shots are from the past before he went to the festival/rave. We had to make sure that we clearly showed this because otherwise it could lead to confusion and could ruin the whole video.

Throughout the video we have quick, sharps shots referring back to the festival/rave our actor has previously been to, we added these in because of the fast tempo of the song and the frequent drops in the song. Due to the drops in the song we thought it would be perfect to have a quick flashback to it. Our video is based on the actor having schizophrenia and having constant panic attacks. Having the shots of the rave added in also gives the audience a reason for why the actor took the drugs in the first place. The video we made is all narrative and so when we first got all the shots we felt there was something missing to liven the video up, and so as a group we decided to put in clips of the rave to keep the audience attached to the music video and not get bored.

The two screenshots above show the audience of how bad the schizophrenia is and the people in the animal masks are in his head. As we were making the video we found it quite unclear whether or not the people in the masks were actually real or not. By adding this scene in it confirms to the audience that they are all in his head, we wanted to make it as clear as possible.

In the genre of electronica there are loads of flashing lights, bright colours and a quick tempo video. We have tried to cover all three of those elements to make our music video fit nicely in that genre. In the video you have the constant flashing lights from the raves he has previously been to. the bright colours occur throughout the whole video and the with the quick change in shots we have tried to keep up with the tempo of the song.
